On May 1st, Musical Theatre West in Long Beach, CA presented Highlights from On This Side of the World to kick off their AAPI Heritage Month celebrations. The virtual event, which was free of charge, was also a fundraiser for the Filipino Migrant Center in Long Beach (around $2k was raised!) There is also a teaser for On This Side of the World‘s participation in MTW’s New Works Festival in person this September. 

Hosted by On This Side of the World’s creators, Paulo K Tiról and Noam Shapiro and MTW’s Paul Garman and Michael Betts, the virtual event featured eight songs in existing videos from the National Alliance for Musical Theatre New Works Festival, Prospect Theater Co.’s IGNITE concert series, and NY Theatre Barn’s New Works Series interspersed with conversations about the creation of this brand new musical. The presentation also features performances by Vincent Rodriguez III (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”), Marc delaCruz (Hamilton), Jaygee Macapugay (School of RockHere Lies Love, Soft Power), Joanne Javien, Diane Phelan (The King and I, School of Rock), Albert Guerzon (Escape to Margaritaville, Honeymoon in Vegas, Ghost The Musical, Mamma Mia!), Kay Trinidad (Hadestown), Belinda Allyn (Allegiance), Michael Protacio, and Kevin Schuering.
