Stephen Adly Guirgis’ “Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train” Receives 3 Lucille Lortel and 2 Outer Critics Circle Nominations

Signature Theatre’s critically acclaimed revival of Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train, by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, has received three 2018 Lucille Lortel Award nominations including Outstanding Revival, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play for Sean Carvajal and Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play for Edi Gathegi.  The production also scored two Outer Critics Circle Award nods for Outstanding Revival of a Play (Broadway of Off-Broadway) and Outstanding Actor in a Play for Sean Carvajal.

Helmed by Obie Award-winner Mark Brokaw, the cast also featured Ricardo Chavira, Stephanie DiMaggio and Erick Betancourt.

In Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train, Angel Cruz (Sean Carvajal) is a 30-year-old bicycle messenger awaiting trial for the death of the leader of a religious cult. Inside Rikers Island, a terrified Angel is befriended by a charismatic serial killer named Lucius Jenkins (Edi Gathegi) . Lucius has found God and been born again, and now, Angel’s life and the course of his trial will be changed forever.

Guirgis is Signature’s current Residency One playwright. Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train was the first of three plays Signature produced over the coming year. Our Lady of 121st Street, directed by Phylicia Rashad, will be presented in May,  with a new play to follow during the 2018-19 Season.
