From an Oscar-nominated film to a world premiere musical, Tony Award-winner BD Wong ((Jurassic World, “Awkwafina is Nora from Queens,” M. Butterfly) and Tony Nominee Wayne Barker (Peter and the Starcatcher) will bring to the Ogunquit Playhouse stage Mr Holland’s Opus, A New Musical, from Friday, August 12 – Saturday, September 17, 2022. Mr. Holland’s Opus – A New Musical, features music by Wayne Barker and book and lyrics by BD Wong, and is based on the screenplay by Patrick Sheane Duncan. BD Wong will direct, with choreography by Darren Lee.
Glenn Holland, gives up his dreams for teaching high school music to make ends meet. Little does he realize that leaving one’s mark on the world can take many different forms, as his temporary detour leads to a lifetime impacting the lives of hundreds. Adapting Patrick Sheane Duncan’s cherished screenplay, this musical journey is a love letter to the enduring influence music has on humanity and the difference one person can make.

BD Wong (Director) Born and raised in San Francisco, Wong made his Broadway debut in M. Butterfly, and is the only actor to be honored with the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Clarence Derwent Award, and Theater World Award for the same performance. Well known for his film roles Jurassic Park, Father of the Bride, and their sequels, as well as voicing Li Shang in Disney’s Mulan. On television, Wong has been a series regular on All-American Girl (Fox), Law and Order: SVU (NBC), Nora From Queens (Comedy Central), with recurring roles on Gotham (Fox) and Mr Robot (USA). Wayne Barker (Composer) Barker is composer of the Tony Award-winning Peter and the Starcatcher and performed for six years with Dame Edna Everage throughout the US, UK, and Australia. Darren Lee (Choreographer) Darren began his career in the Entertainment Industry at age 11 as a contestant on Junior Star Search before becoming a series regular on Disney Channel’s Kids Incorporated. As an adult performer, he relocated to New York with Broadway roles in Allegiance, Shogun the Musical, Miss Saigon, and more. Lex Jiang (Set and Costume Design) Lex is an award-winning production designer for theatre and live events. His scenic and costume designs have been seen across the country and around the globe at various Off-Broadway, regional, and international theatre and dance venues. Born and raised in California, Lex has made NYC home for the last 20 years after graduating from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. He is the founder and principal of LDC Design Associates, a boutique design and production house specializing in experiential event design and bespoke interiors. Richard Latta (Lighting Design) OP: Jersey Boys, 42nd Street, Cabaret, Oklahoma!, An American in Paris (IRNE Award Nomination), Grumpy Old Men the Musical. He is currently the longest serving employee at Ogunquit Playhouse, beginning as a crew member in 1985 and serving as a Lighting Designer since 1987. In that time, he’s designed hundreds of shows and watched in amazement as the Playhouse evolved from its humble Summer Stock beginnings to a producing entity that presents classics, re-inventions of recent shows, and gives life to brand new productions. Kevin Heard (Sound Designer) Kevin is thrilled and grateful to be returning to Ogunquit Playhouse and live audiences! Cheryl Dolan (Resident Scenic Charge) Cheryl has returned to the Playhouse for her 15th season. After taking over as Resident Scenic Charge 12 years ago, she has designed several sets for our Youth Theatre Program, as well as adding her artistic eye to many of the main stage productions. Since falling in love with the Playhouse, Cheryl, and her husband Geof (Technical Director) have made the Seacoast their home year-round. Cheryl considers the staff at OP her family and hopes her love and passion for theater is translated through these productions to all of you.
Binder Casting (Casting Director) Founded by Jay Binder nearly 40 years ago, has been a part of RWS Entertainment Group since 2016.
