America Elects the First AAPI Vice President with Biden Harris Win

For Immediate Release

WASHINGTON–APAICS congratulates President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on their historic campaign. As a result of this election, Harris will be the first woman of color to be sworn into the executive office.
“This is a momentous occasion, especially for Asian American Pacific Islander Women and women of color,” said Madalene Xuan-Trang Mielke, APAICS president and CEO. “Vice President-elect Harris’ background as an Asian American and Black woman, the daughter of immigrants, shows us that the American dream is still alive. Most of all, her win gives hope that we can overcome racism and xenophobia as a country to elect individuals that are representative of all of us.”

As an organization, APAICS was built on the mission of promoting AAPI representation and participation in public service. In 2019, APAICS introduced the Women’s Collective, a program aimed at building a community that inspires and supports AAPI women to become politically engaged. Through its work with partners like ReflectUs, APAICS has worked with nearly 500 AAPI women to enter public service.

“We are so proud of Vice President-elect Harris, and all of the AAPI women who ran for elected office this year. Representation matters, and Vice President-elect Harris will continue to inspire so many AAPI women to run for higher office and to get involved in public service.“
The 117th Congress will have a contingency with 19 AAPIs, nine are women, with four races being too close to call. In total, 343 AAPIs ran in the 2020 election cycle across the country with 151 projected winners.
APAICS encourages the Biden-Harris administration to make racial and gender equity a priority when filling positions in the new administration. In a joint venture with NCAPA, APAICS is currently collecting profiles for an AAPI-focused political appointments resume bank.
The Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) is a national non-partisan, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting Asian Pacific American participation and representation at all levels of the political process, from community service to elected office.
