Congratulations to my cousin Elena Rodriguez, a senior from Mission High School and one of six SF Unified School District 2020 graduates to receive the Superintendent’s 21st Century Award. The Award comes with a $3000 scholarship from SFUSD for exemplifying the skills of the SFUSD Graduate Profile.

San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews informed each of the honorees over Zoom. Due to the COVID-19 shutdown, a public event was impossible this year.

Elena was highlighted in an article which appeared in the June 1, 2020 edition of the San Francisco Examiner.

San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews  writes, “Elena Rodriguez from Mission High School was one of seven students selected to attend the Model United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Bringing everything she learned about social justice and human rights to an international conference, she witnessed how young people from all over the world have similar passions and drive to change the world. Elena had the opportunity to learn Spanish and Mandarin while attending Mission, helping her connect to her dual cultural heritage and her greater community.” Click here to read to complete article.

Last summer, Elena attended a Barnard Pre-college program for the Young Women’s Leadership Institute in New York and I had the chance to spend some time with her and her mother, Katharine Fong.

Elena is also one of two San Francisco high school graduates to win the California Interscholastic Federation’s 2020 CIF Scholar-Athlete Award (and a $1,000 scholarship) for her four years as a starter for Mission High’s Varsity Girl Soccer team and her “perfect” academic record during that time.

The graduation ceremony will take place on Zoom on Tuesday, June 9, 2020. She will attend UC San Diego in the Fall.
